Watches used to be all about time, but today watches are all about making a statement of who you are and what you stand for. I am not a big watch collector; in fact I only started wearing a watch regularly about 5 years ago. Like most of you I have a mobile phone, which on every new release is packed with more and more functions; but it's not something that can reflect your character and personal style quite like a quality timepiece can. I currently have four watches in my small collection, three of which I know longer wear and the other I purchased about 18 months ago, it is a modern minimalist and thin design which at the time suited my snappy dress sense. However for some time now I have been looking for a watch that is large and masculine, a watch that was as bold and confident as I am but at a price I was willing to stretch to; and at last I have found it. Diesel are known for producing bold designs that dare to be different, and with the new Diesel Super Bad Ass watches I think they have excelled themselves. Unpacking the Men's Diesel DZ7125 WatchI was very excited when the box turned up, eagerly tearing off the Masking Tape to get to the inner Diesel watch box, which as you can see from the images in the right hand column is a white leather effect box that represents the Diesel ethos perfectly, I thought it quite apt that the box itself has got the same style steel rivets as seen on the watch itself; all though this Diesel watch box design was around way before they designed and manufactured the Diesel DZ7125 watch, or was it? When I first lifted the lid and set eyes on this watch I was blown away by the sheer size, and then by the finish (I will go into the materials in a minute). My first thought was 'is this watch going to look ridiculous on my average sized wrist' (7" round). As a BWC colleague pointed out to me, "you could be forgiven for thinking you had ordered a sophisticated beer matt!"
Like all shops online we tend to rely on the manufacturers for supplying our product images, because they are done with professional equipment and because they usually use what is called a light box. This is to keep reflections down to a minimum so that the camera can get detailed images of the watch face without glare and reflections which reduce the cameras ability to capture every last detail. The downside is the Diesel DZ7125 watch image we currently have on our product page looks as if the case is a matt/brushed silver, when in actual fact as can be seen on the image above is a pristine mirror finished polish steel. In the Diesel watch box you will find a huge manual in various languages, which has been stamped and dated in the back by the official retailer; in this case the British Watch Company. This final point is very important, one because official Diesel shops only sell genuine Diesel DZ7125 watches and two the manufacturer will honour the 2 year Diesel guarantee should it develop a fault as a result of manufacturer defects. The watch itself arrives strapped around a white leather look cushion to keep it crinkle free and to prevent the solid stainless steel buckle clasp from rubbing against the case back. MaterialsOn the subject of the materials used, I was impressed by the solid steel case, not only because it has a mirror finish which oozes quality, but also the detailing on the side you can't see on the manufacturers image. The case side has what can only be described as a diamond patterned embedded into it, this has a fantastic effect of reflecting the light which will catch the attention of anyone in close proximity. The reverse of the watch has a mirrored polished steel case back with the Diesel 'Only the Brave' emblem etched into it. The Diesel DZ7125 like all Diesel Super Bad Ass watches has a 30m water resistance so it doesn't have a screw down case back. If you plan to purchase a watch to swim or dive in the Diesel Super Bad Ass watch range is not for you.
There are several more models in the Diesel Super Bas Ass range, I went for this particular model because I wanted a leather strap watch, and also because I loved the contrast between the black and what looks like brushed aluminium decorative plates on the watch face which give it a really rugged and masculine look. The leather strap also impressed me, I have another leather strapped watch in my collection but of a cheaper variety meaning the strap itself does not conform well to ones wrist due to its clumsy inability to be soft enough to do so comfortably. ©BritishWatchCompany.com - This page is Protected by CopyScape - Do not copy |
Diesel Super Bad Ass Watch Functions
The main dial is controlled using the big crown on the right hand side, it is used to set the time as well as the date window. There are also two push buttons, one each side of the large crown which are for using the chronograph function. The left hand round dial has a crown dead centre on the left hand side of the case. Above this there is a smaller crown for changing the time of the top small analogue display, this smaller dial also has 24 hour markers around the outside which I thought was a nice touch and handy if you have family in the far flung places or are yourself on your travels. The digital display is controlled by two push buttons which come out of the steel lugs at the bottom of the case used to attach the leather strap. The digital display itself displays the time in both 12 hour and 24 hour formats, at a press of the right hand push button. However I was a little disappointed when I realised the Diesel DZ7125 doesn't have an alarm function; but then I can rely on my trusty smart phone for those duties. I should point out at this stage I happened to go out last night wearing this Diesel masterpiece, apart from several complimentary comments from friends regarding the watch I happen to notice on my way home in the dead of night the hands on all three analogue dials have luminous inserts. The chronograph hands are completely luminous which made seeing the watch in the dark a breeze, even after a few hearty winter warmers.
ConclusionOverall I have been left with a big smile to match the big watch face, the build quality is excellent, the finish and attention to detail spot on and its functional; albeit most of us wouldn't have the need for four time zones, but it's nice to know they are available. The watch is large, but that's what I like the most about it, and I bow to Diesel for going against the norm; as Diesel say ' Only the Brave'. All though having got used to it, I find myself thinking maybe all watches produced to date were just not made big enough? The watch doesn't look ridiculous and I have an average sized wrist (7"), which happens to be exactly in the middle of the minimum and maximum strap length. Like all things its not perfect, I would have preferred the watch have a 5 Bar (50m water resistance), and an alarm function. However it has definitely been one of those purchases I haven't regretted; it was well worth every penny.

Above all else the biggest and best surprise was the incredible finish and detailing a photo can never portray.
Diesel have used a very high quality genuine leather, that is strong enough to hold that monstrous case on your arm yet supple enough that it conforms well around your wrist and as a result it is very comfortable. The leather strap is also quite wide where it attaches to the case, which is a good thing given the sheer size and weight of the steel case; I should point out that the case is of course quite large and as a result the heaviest watch I have however it is not to heavy that it is cumbersome. I was expecting the watch to move a lot on my wrist due to its size and weight, but it actually sits nice and snug with minimal movement. The strap is crocodile finish giving it an edgy and rugged look, which works very well with the overall design.
As you can see from the image to the left, the Diesel DZ7125 watch has several push buttons and crowns for the three analogue dials and the bottom digital display.
Would I wear it 24/7, probably not for the simple fact the watch is large and has a flawless mirror finish.
